Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that is defined as inflammation of the synovial membrane that covers the joints and the tendons. This inflammation is triggered by the immune system and both genetic and environmental factors are involved.

If the triggering events are not eliminated and if the inflammation is not resolved then this may ultimately result in a malfunctioning osteoarthritic joint.

Although the joints are the primary target of immune system activated inflammation all tissues of the body can be affected.
