Thousands of years ago Hippocrates said “let food be your medicine and medicine be your food” This is just as relevant today – except we now have many more foods from which to choose, including many with sub-optimal value and some which are harmful.

The science of nutrition is rapidly evolving and incomplete and as a result, there are often confusing and contradictory messages. At the core, optimal nutrition equires an understanding of healthy eating. As we enter the era of precision medicine what constitutes healthy eating is likely to be different from one person to the next.  In general we know that dietary habits have a crucial influence on health including autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular health and the risk of cancer.

Optimal nutrition also includes an understanding of food gathering and shopping, cooking, digestion, absorption and assimilation of nutrients and elimination.
Over the past decades, emerging studies suggest that alteration of intestinal microbiota, known as gut dysbiosis, contributes to the occurrence or development of many diseases including of the rheumatic diseases. Gut dysbiosis profoundly affects the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory immune responses.
The near future is likely to see therapies targeting the gut bacteria prevent or cure rheumatic disease.
